Building a startup can consume you. Your days blur into weeks, weeks blur into months, and time becomes meaningless. There are no days off and no end in sight. The goal is to work quickly and always be looking forward. There is always more to do. Your world shrinks as you block out anything that pulls your attention away from the business. You become lost in the process, and in being lost, it is easy to forget why you started down this road in the first place.
The past six months have been a grind and I have definitely gotten lost a few times along the way. It can be hard to see any real meaning in mopping floors, painting walls, filing taxes or paying bills, but these are the little things that ultimately make Bitmaker Labs real. And to be honest, I didn't really appreciate how important every step of the process was until today.
Yesterday was the first day of the Spring 2013 cohort at Bitmaker Labs and it was one of the best days of my life. Twenty-four amazing, bright, energetic people walked through our doors early morning and began what is sure to be an unforgettable nine weeks. The energy and excitement of the students was contagious.
Seeing students still working late night on the first day was truly inspiring. I can only imagine where they'll be nine weeks from now. If they can maintain this level of dedication throughout the program, one thing is for sure: the Bitmaker Labs Spring 2013 class will be a huge success.
As I reflect on yesterday, I realize that this program is not as much about programming literacy or disrupting education as it is about helping others realize their full potential. There is no greater purpose than that. Improving people's lives is really what Bitmaker Labs is all about.
Yesterday was a great day for everyone involved with Bitmaker Labs and I've never been more proud to be a part of something in my life.
